The world’s most famous animated family is officially coming back to theaters. 20th Century Studios confirmed that a new “Simpsons” movie will hit cinemas on July 23, 2027, marking the franchise’s first big-screen outing since 2007.
While the film remains untitled and plot details are still under wraps, fans got a teaser image of Homer Simpson reaching for his beloved pink-frosted doughnut, this time decorated with a number “2” made of sprinkles. The tagline playfully reads: “Homer’s going back for seconds.”
A Long-Awaited Sequel
The original “The Simpsons Movie” premiered in 2007 and was a massive box-office success, grossing over $536 million worldwide. The story followed Homer and his family as they tried to save Springfield after the Environmental Protection Agency sealed the town under a giant dome.
The new film will land just shy of the 20-year mark since that first theatrical release. Ironically, in the chalkboard gag that opened Season 19 following the first movie, Bart Simpson wrote: “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.” Yet, here we are—almost exactly two decades later.
Slotting Into Disney’s Release Calendar
Disney, which owns 20th Century Studios, confirmed the sequel will take the place of an untitled Marvel movie in its updated release schedule. No official word has been given on the creative team or whether longtime series writers and cast will return, though it’s widely expected.
What’s Next for Springfield?
Currently in its 37th television season, “The Simpsons” continues to be a pop culture juggernaut, known for its satirical take on American life and uncanny ability to predict world events. The announcement of a second movie has reignited excitement among longtime fans eager to see the family’s antics on the big screen once again.
Mark your calendars: Springfield hits theaters July 23, 2027.
